Our Involvement

Establishment of a visitor centre and rehabilitating the Western Gate.

Nestled at the core of Old Damascus (WHS), lies the historic Citadel of Damascus. A symbol of power since the 10th century AD, it was the traditional seat of the ruling elite, its stones echoing centuries of history. Over time, a portion of it served as a prison, and access to the citadel remained restricted, never open to the Damascene public.

This project forms part of a broader master plan to revive the citadel. Our focus was on establishing a welcoming visitors’ centre and rehabilitating the Western Gate. We undertook meticulous investigations of the historic fabric, aiming to preserve its intrinsic attributes while employing authentic techniques wherever possible, thereby enhancing the structure’s enduring significance. Reversibility is evident in the dialogue between the original masonry and the subtle modern elements—respectful of history yet forward looking.

The resulting visitors’ centre is a contemporary space that hosts an exhibition space and a gift shop, offering practical touristic information, seamlessly blending the past with the present.
